BOURBON vs. RYE vs. SCOTCH: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

BOURBON vs. RYE vs. SCOTCH: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Bourbon, rye, and Scotch all share the same family tree, but they definitely didn't inherit the same personality. Grab a glass and let's break down what actually separates these three brown spirits, from the grain in the mash bill to the barrel they call home.

Bourbon: The Sweet Talker

To legally call itself bourbon, a whisky has to be made in the USA, mashed from at least 51% corn, and aged in new, charred oak barrels. That charred wood is the secret weapon: it's where bourbon picks up its deep caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak sweetness. Our Barnburner Whisky lineup lives proudly in this camp, corn-forward and built for sipping neat or over one big cube.

Rye: The Spicy Sibling

Swap the corn for rye grain and everything changes. Rye whisky needs at least 51% rye in the mash, which trades bourbon's sweetness for a drier, spicier profile with notes of black pepper and clove. It's the reason a Manhattan or Old Fashioned made with rye tastes sharper and more assertive than one made with bourbon.

Scotch: The Old-World Cousin

Scotch has to be distilled and aged in Scotland for a minimum of three years, and single malt Scotch is made from 100% malted barley in copper pot stills. Depending on the region, you'll find everything from light and floral to thick, smoky, and peaty. It's a completely different production process from bourbon and rye, which is part of why the flavours land so differently in the glass.

So Which One's for You?

If you gravitate toward caramel, vanilla, and a smooth, easy sip, start with a bourbon. If you like a little heat and spice in your cocktail, reach for rye. And if smoky complexity is your thing, Scotch is calling your name. There's no wrong answer here, just different moods.

Quick Cheat Sheet

Bourbon: American, corn-based, sweet and caramel-forward. Rye: American, rye-based, spicy and dry. Scotch: Scottish, barley-based, complex and often smoky. Save this list for your next liquor store debate.
