BARNBURNER Cask-Strength Bourbon — the one they almost didn’t let cross the border. Aged 5 years in Bardstown, bottled at a full-throttle 60% ABV, this is bourbon in its natural, untamed state. Each bottle is hand-numbered and traced back to the barrel it escaped from.
Smooth, fiery, and dangerously collectable — a perfect gift for anyone who likes their whisky like their stories: strong and a little outlaw.
MASH BILL and TASTING NOTES
75% Corn - 13% Rye - 12% Malted Barley
Nose:
Inviting aromas of caramelized brown sugar, toasted oak, and vanilla bean, followed by hints of honeycomb, orange zest, and roasted pecan. Subtle undertones of leather and tobacco reveal its maturity.
Palate:
Exceptionally smooth and rounded, opening with butterscotch, maple syrup, and crème brûlée, balanced by spiced rye, clove, and a touch of dried fruit. The texture is silky yet full-bodied, coating the palate with warmth and depth.
Finish:
Long, lingering, and elegant — notes of oak spice, vanilla, and dark chocolate fade slowly, leaving a soft sweetness and a gentle Kentucky hug.
Overall Character:
A refined bourbon that balances richness with restraint, complexity with comfort — a bourbon made not just to sip, but to savour.
Even better with Black Friday deal.
After bourbon practically disappeared from shelves in Ontario, I’ve been hunting for something — anything — that could fill the gap. I wasn’t expecting much when I picked up Barnburner Cask-Strength Bourbon, but honestly? This might be the best thing we’ve been able to get our hands on since the crackdown. I absolutely love it, and it’s quickly become one of my favourite bottles in the province, full stop.
In fact, after finishing my first pour, I immediately went back and picked up four more bottles — partly because I’m obsessed, and partly out of pure fear it would sell out. It’s that good, and Ontario releases can disappear fast.
Nose
Right from the pour, it hits way above its weight. There’s a huge wave of caramelized sugar, toasted oak, and vanilla, but what surprised me most is how inviting it is for 60%. Warm honeycomb, orange zest, and roasted pecan notes rise up once it opens. Nothing feels harsh or overpowering — just layered and mature.
Palate
This is where it really won me over. For a cask-strength bourbon, it’s unbelievably smooth without losing any punch. Think butterscotch, maple syrup, and crème brûlée — all the rich dessert notes — balanced by rye spice, clove, and hints of dried fruit. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and silky, coating the palate with depth and warmth. No sharp edges, no bitterness.
Finish
Long, lingering, and deeply satisfying. Oak spice, vanilla, and dark chocolate stay with you, slowly tapering into a gentle Kentucky hug. It’s the kind of finish that reminds you why you fell in love with bourbon in the first place.
Overall
For me, this is the best bourbon currently available in Ontario — not just because choices are limited, but because it genuinely holds its own against bottles that used to be staples here. It’s rich, complex, refined, and delivers everything you want from a proper Kentucky-born bourbon bottled at full proof.
At around $70, it feels like a steal. Between the flavour, the character, and the fact that it’s actually accessible locally, Barnburner has earned a permanent spot in my cabinet — and apparently four backup spots too.
If you’re a bourbon drinker frustrated with Ontario’s current lineup, this is absolutely worth grabbing… and maybe grabbing more than one.
Perfect to wheel out over the holidays
Not for the faint of heart. Be warned but it's bold
